Tick, Tick... Boom! is a passionate musical about the life of a struggling artist that deals with companionship, perseverance, and loss. This narrative is far from unique but Tick, Tick... Boom! compensates for that with flavorful delivery. The music is skillful and each original song is elevated by stylish filmmaking. Tight choreography, rhythmic cuts, and amplified imagery accompany every musical number. This makes the film vibrant and catchy on both a visual and audio level. However, despite the flurry of sound and motion, the acting is the true linchpin of Tick, Tick... Boom!.
In particular, Andrew Garfield brings maximum commitment to the production, hitting beats ranging from smug sarcasm to deep pain, and singing his heart out too. He manages to believably exude many conflicting emotions through his layered character, all while saving time for showmanship flair. In the end, Tick, Tick... Boom! throws a lot at its viewers by combining music, time manipulation, tragedy, humor, narration, and exaggeration into a shotgun blast of entertainment. And while this might not harmonize into a delicate masterpiece, Tick, Tick... Boom! is certainly a robust artistic effort.
