Train Dreams is gentle existentialism. The sparse plot leaves space for drama to delicately yet thunderously intertwine with themes. It contemplates aspects of the human condition like purpose, memory, nature, connection, impermanence, loneliness, and guilt. However, it refrains from providing easy answers, instead choosing to immerse in bittersweet nuance. Relatable motivations, elusive flaws, and inspirational growth are woven into the protagonist. Its dialogue balances poetry alongside authenticity. There’s foreshadowing, symbolism, and minimalism. Meanwhile, the acting marries deep internalization with intense eruptions. As a result, Train Dreams brews profound emotions.

Train Dreams feels intimate yet grand, grounded yet surreal, and tragic yet celebratory. Utilizing majestic lighting plus expressive composition, its cinematography has meaningful beauty. A freeform structure as well as unhurried pacing establish a sense of wistful editing. Though subjective, the sound is defined by its natural ambiance. The music adds almost mystical swells of emotion. A looming character of its own, the production design offers rural settings through modernizing eras. Despite not possessing much stardom, its cast contains top-notch skill and fit. The effects add important scale while maintaining a rustic aesthetic. Consequently, Train Dreams is poignant.
