Transformers One

Transformers One is definitively average. Its formulaic writing is full of exposition and tropes. Turning points are coincidental and lore is mindless. Its dialogue is either blunt explanations, empty platitudes, or repetitive humor. Characters are flat and inconsistent, doing whatever the plot needs. The drama is undeveloped, centered around an abrupt and unearned arc. The acting's commitment almost gives the illusion of sincere growth, but performances are primarily one-note. There are contrivances, digressions, cliches, and superficial world-building. Any shoehorned messages about non-violence come across as hypocritical. Thus, Transformers One's story is barely functional.

Technically, Transformers One is adequate. Its generic direction delivers clunky tones. Mostly basic, the imagery can get cluttered or drab. Although action-packed, its editing rushes drama, which impedes momentum. The sound offers expected genre elements but lacks emotional subjectivity. Its music amounts to forgettable but appropriate synth scoring. Despite retro and outrun influences, the production design is missing humanity and is one giant product placement. Its cast has notable fame (though neutralized by being voice-only), decent diversity, and arbitrary fit. The animation is unimpressively proficient. Overall, there isn't much about Transformers One that stands out.
