Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is thinly disguised commercialism. It shoehorns in some formulaic development but that's indirectly related to the plot. The main story is a convoluted MacGuffin hunt with excessive characters, punishing exposition, and predictable cliches. It has cringey dialogue, contrivances, inconsistencies, and unclear logistics. There's no real arc, theme, or resolution because the ending is focused on sequel bait. The actors muster some relatability, chemistry, and vulnerability (specifically Ramos), but they can only do so much with afterthought drama. A franchising stepping stone by design, Rise of the Beasts is stagnant, artificial, and tensionless.

Technically, Rise of the Beasts devolves into sensory overload without a true personality or tone. The imagery is adequate until the bleak and cluttered climax. Its editing is rushed and bloated. The effects are almost all digital with an unconvincing video game look. Its robot designs get generic (especially the villains) and the final battle setting is downright ugly. Most of the famous cast members are only voices. Its sound is comprehensive and sometimes emotional, yet dabbles in noisy chaos. The 90s hip-hop soundtrack is the best part (though it gets oddly modern at the end). Overall, Rise of the Beasts has decent pieces but crumbles into a disposable merchandising heap.
