Troll 2

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Troll 2 is disastrous. Both cluttered as well as thin, its story is erratic. Despite excessive exposition, everything is nonsensical. There's random lore, inconsistent motivations, dead-end plotlines, pointless scenes, and misaligned setup/payoff. This results in a confusing series of events, demanding viewers to give up on trying to understand. Repetitive throughout, its characters remain flat plus stagnant. The dialogue is impressively weird. Meanwhile, its acting is a symphony of amateur mistakes: painful overacting, wooden monotony, cringy awkwardness, and even breaking of character. Thus, Troll 2's incoherent ineptitude constantly shatters the suspension of disbelief.

Technically, Troll 2 fails to establish tone, continuity, style, or believability. Despite a few intentional shots, the imagery has flat lighting, uncomfortable close-ups, and unclear geography. Butchering timing, its editing cuts unnaturally between interactions while leaving in unnecessary footage. The sound feels cheap, silly, and poorly leveled, with obvious ADR. Its music is distractingly low-grade, plus it often confuses the mood. Through cramped locations and novice quality, the production design is shockingly unconvincing. Its cast is void of fame, presence, or skill. The effects are incompetent. Altogether, Troll 2 deserves its status as a funny-bad movie icon.
