Under Paris

While Under Paris tries to elevate its creature feature appeal with environmentalism themes and character drama, these compartmentalized ingredients detract rather than synergize. It's all underdeveloped, stammering momentum and clashing tones. Social commentary on serious issues and wacky carnage are complicated moods to merge. Meanwhile, its interpersonal drama is formulaic to the point of being unnecessary. The acting commits with decent outbursts, tears, and internalization. However, it's still disengaging because there's no personality or depth. Basically, Under Paris is on autopilot, simulating a derivative story before finally blurting out a mediocre climax.

Technically, Under Paris is thin. Its aimless direction fails to reconcile its disorganized parts. The cinematography adds lighting and focus, but is often drenched in dark drabness. Its editing is downright sterile, with indifferent structure and pacing. The sound offers stings, action, and intimate muting. Its soundtrack is wholly generic and relatively monotonous. The production design only has the French canals and catacombs, but is otherwise a non-factor. Its cast is thoroughly replaceable. The CGI is impressively cheap, distracting every scene in which a shark moves and giving the overall film an amateur quality. Consequently, Under Paris is a throwaway movie.
