Wake Up Dead Man invigorates a vintage subgenre. Its convoluted plot as well as underwhelming side characters are offset by compelling protagonists plus fitting themes. Contemporary critiques of fearmongering, hypocrisy, truth, and absolution are naturally folded in. In turn, it satirizes modern exploitations of religion while giving counterexamples of what faith should be. There's witty dialogue, motivation, and detective work. Though the arcs, along with the reveal, are vaguely set up/paid off, emotional investment is anchored through the acting's engaging mixture of personality, intensity, and vulnerability. Thus, Wake Up Dead Man's subtext is its greatest strength.
Unifying comedy, mystery, and social commentary, Wake Up Dead Man solidifies a layered tone. Dramatic lighting as well as movement define its cinematography. While overlong, the editing energizes pacing via inserts plus timeline jumps. Voiceovers, smash cuts, and subjective distortions enhance its soundscape. Combining jazzy influences with gothic orchestrals, the music balances whodunit fun alongside theological meditations. Its production design centers a sense of place around a small-town church. Despite an underutilized ensemble, the cast has impressive depth. Its effects are minor but noticable. Although imperfect on the surface, Wake Up Dead Man is well-rounded.
