Werewolf by Night

Werewolf by Night is light style with no substance. It's an hour-long special that doesn't know if it's an episode or a feature. Generic character conflicts are introduced with minor payoffs, the plot is a flimsy excuse for action, and thematic meaning is completely nonexistent. Essentially, Werewolf by Night's sole purpose is to introduce a MacGuffin and some characters that might be used later. That's it. The acting is fine, but since the story is so incomplete, there isn't any growth, depth, or compelling motivation. Everyone is one-note and those notes are fairly sterile given the MCU's modus operandi. Ultimately, there is no actual drama to connect with here.

Technically, Werewolf by Night is a superficial homage. It's monochromatic with digital film reel imperfections. The music is dramatic, fitting, and utilizes a classic song. The werewolf design is practical and restrained. There's impressive shadowing, lighting, and framing. However, the meat of Werewolf by Night is still abundant CGI, generic MCU props, basic visuals (besides a couple shots), plain editing with weak momentum, and a sterile tone. Plus, the mildly violent action has standard choreography. Finally, the sound is literal, the cast is underwhelming, and the production design internally clashes. Overall, Werewolf by Night tries new elements but inconsistently commits.
