Contrived and convoluted, X-Men Origins: Wolverine rushes through a trope checklist without making anything its own. The drama is completely undeveloped with flat characters, inconsistent motivations, cringe dialogue, and no arc. The script prioritizes circular cliches and lame fan service over emotional relatability. It's impressive how a story can be all plot yet that plot is paper-thin. This bleeds into the acting, which comes across as stilted, cheesy, and disengaged. Jackman attempts intensity and physicality, but even he can't connect to the non-action scenes. Consequently, X-Men Origins: Wolverine mishmashes a generalized genre outline with passionless negligence.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine whiplashes between unearned tones with minimal style. Passable lighting and framing barely compensate for the imagery's drab and cluttered finale. Its rushed editing causes choppy structure, absent momentum, and overcut action. Genre elements and emotional distortions make the sound, at least, competent. Its generic music never creates a positive impact. Along with an ugly climax, the production design fumbles the time period. Its cast isn't worth noting outside of Jackman (and Reynolds' minor screen time). The effects combine stunts, prosthetics, awkward wires, and cartoonish digital work. Overall, X-Men Origins: Wolverine does almost nothing correctly.
