You People is sloppy. Its unoriginal premise invites important themes, but the script stops there. Characters are flat, romance is forced, dialogue is repetitive, and the narrative meanders. It stagnates into missed opportunities, never following through with valuable discussions. Instead, scenes are fluffed with cringe humor, pop culture references, and inauthentic behaviors. The acting elevates the material with natural anxiety, awkwardness, and tension, but everyone is one-note. Plus, the ending is unearned and formulaic. These shortcomings trivialize perspectives, minimize stakes, and oversimplify solutions. Overall, You People just isn't polished, insightful, or vulnerable enough.
Technically, You People is weak. Its talented cast is its only virtue. The editing has flashy montages, split screens, and superimposed transitions, but its pacing rushes emotions and the structure completely breaks down. Its cinematography is unmotivated and dull, the sound is plain, and the production design adds little more than some product placements. The effects provide social media flairs but those almost seem out of place. Finally, one of the main musical choices features Kanye West, who is completely at odds with the film's messages. Ultimately, viewers will want to appreciate the honorable topics, but You People's clumsy execution constantly undermines itself.
